Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. How much do you need to pay for traveling in Romania?
Most of our tours include transfer from Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca or another set departure location to the included attractions. We can provide a car, a minibus or a coach depending on the number of travelers.
If you intend to explore one of the cities on your own and you decide to use public transportation, consider a few things first.
If you want a cheap solution, choose a bus or subway ride. You will pay less than for a taxi ride, but you should take into account that buses and trains are usually very crowded.
A taxi is more expensive, but, at least, you travel alone or with your friends only. You should pay attention at the route as some drivers take advantage of foreigners and circle them around to increase the sum on the meter. Or, worse, other drivers attempt to negotiate a set cost for the ride and keep the meter off. You should not accept this arrangement, as you will end up paying more than the ride is actually worth.
Avoid taxi scams by using ridesharing apps such as Uber of Taxify, where you pay for the ride in advance and the drivers can’t overcharge you.
Is it safe to visit Romania?
According to several rankings, Romania is a generally safe country. On the Global Terrorist Database, our country ranks at 138/163 countries. This certifies that no terrorist attacks have occured here.
The Global Peace Index, another important ranking system, considers several factors. These include militarization, society, security, as well as domestic and interest conflict. On these index, we rank on 22/163 countries.
Crime rate in Romania is lower than the European average. However – and unfortunately – corruption is relatively high in our country. If you find yourself in a situation where authorities offer you a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution, you should refuse such arrangements and seek legal justification.
Need to Know before traveling to Romania
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Driving
In case you decide to rent a car and drive yourself around, here are a few pointers that ensure you will have a safe journey. Pay attention inside cities, as many drivers tend to break the law (speeding or crossing red lights). Better safe than sorry! Also, plan ahead when you drive somewhere as parking spots inside cities are very hard to find.
Outside cities, carts and animals on the road are a common occurence around villages. Besides, National Roads tend to get overcrowded due to the lack of highways, so you should get ready to spend some time in traffic.
Pickpocketing
Muggings are not a common occurrence on our streets. However, you may encounter pickpockets – especially in buses or the subway, where the large crowds work in their advantage. Some pickpockets are inexperienced and they just attempt to grab your bag and run. Others, however, manage to steal your belongings and disappear before you even notice.
Our advice is to always keep your purse/bag within eyesight. This discourages thieves, as the risk is too high. If you have any high-value items with you, the best course of action would be to leave these in the hotel safe when possible.
According to Romanian laws:
- Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
- You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
- Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble
Travel Insurance
Always get travel insurance before visiting a foreign country. This way, if something unexpected happens, you and your family will not experience financial loss. Travel Insurance covers a wide range of issues. One of these is healthcare.
While in your country, you may receive free care or take advantage of subsidized costs, these facilities do not apply abroad. Furthermore, medical expenses can be quite high, but a good insurance company can cover these expenses.
